Beijing / Wuhan. Mothers infected with the corona virus can pass the pathogen on to their newborn. Such an infection was found in an infant only 30 hours after birth, Zeng Lingkong, head of the newborn ward at Wuhan Children’s Hospital, said the China News Service news agency on Wednesday.
The baby shows stable signs of life, but has inflammation of the lungs and slightly abnormal liver function, the doctor reported. Before that, however, children were born to infected mothers whose test for the pathogen had been negative. However, the data now available showed that newborns are not exempt from infection.
The World Health Organization announced on Wednesday that there is still no remedy for the coronavirus. When asked about media reports of a breakthrough in the search for an antidote, a WHO spokesman in Geneva said there was “no known effective therapy” for the virus.
