Offenbach (dpa / lhe) – The director Volker Schlöndorff was awarded the honorary prize at the Hessian Film and Cinema Prize. Schlöndorff accepted the award on Friday in Offenbach. Around 350 guests were invited to the gala.

Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) praised the Wiesbaden-born Oscar winner (Die Blechtrommel) as an “outstanding personality in the film and cinema world”. In his work, the director repeatedly takes up social debates.

The focus of the evening was on films on civil liberties, equality and dealing with death. The Newcomer Prize, endowed with € 7,500, went to the Belarusian director Aliaksei Paluyan. He studied directing in Kassel. His thesis “Courage” deals with the protests in his home country against the ruler Lukashenko.

Britta Hammelstein and Jens Harzer were honored as best actress and actor with the Hessian Television Prize, which the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation had awarded. Hammelstein was honored with her role in “Today Kainer dies here”. Harzer was honored for his performance in the tragic comedy “Calm! Here Lothar dies”. The Hessian Film and Cinema Prize has been awarded since 1990. There was a break last year because of Corona.
