Avignon: the Joly-Jean school, a future sustainable establishment within an eco-district

The construction site of the future Joly-Jean school, which began symbolically with the laying of the first stone on March 9, should last two years, for an opening in September 2024.

Modern and inclusive school, with a class dedicated to autistic children, its construction will focus on sustainable development, consistent with the Joly-Jean eco-district where it is located and its environment. The City of Avignon, which is in charge of the project, has chosen to include this project in an approach BDM (Mediterranean Sustainable Building) and Bepos (Positive Energy Building). This includes a strong environmental approach from the upstream phases to the delivery of the site.

The BDM gold label has already been obtained for the design phase and the City hopes to keep it also during the execution of the works.

A 100% energy self-sufficient school

“The building will be exemplary in terms of the environment and energy. It will be at the maximum of what can be done in renewable energies. It will include photovoltaic panels to meet its own energy consumption and even beyond since it will also be able to supply them to the Espace Pluriel social center and the Jean-Louis Barrault library, located nearby.explains Cécile Helle, mayor of Avignon.

The future 3,046 m school2 of floor area will also have adjustable sunshades, a fully green roof, a skylight and a wooden frame. A recovery of calories from the water table in winter and its freshness in summer is also planned.

A large place left to nature

Outside, many species will be planted, the courtyard will be planted and the children will even have an educational vegetable garden at their disposal. A peaceful forecourt will be located in front of the school, along avenue de la Trillade, and will be connected to the soft mobility path of the green corridor, from avenue du Moulin Notre-Dame to avenue de la Croix birds.

A total of 23 companies will work on the site, 75% local (Vaucluse, Gard, Bouches-du-Rhône).

The works, worth 12.3 million euros, are financed by the municipality to the tune of 9.3 million euros, Grand Avignon for 1.6 million euros and the State (1, 4 million euros). Project management is provided by Matthieu Husser Architectures (agent architect) as well as by Fischmeister Architectures (associate architect).
