Germán Efromovich, former president of Avianca and one of the largest shareholders of the company, was arrested this Wednesday in Brazil along with his brother José in an operation in the Lava Jato case, outside of that airline and investigating alleged fraud in purchase contracts , sale and construction of ships, the Brazilian press has reported.

The prison orders have been issued by a court in the Brazilian city of Curitiba, but were later replaced by house arrest with electronic surveillance due to the “risks as a consequence of the covid-19 pandemic,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported.

The Federal Public Ministry specified in a statement that the two executives are accused of having committed irregularities in the bidding processes for the purchase, sale and construction of ships, in addition to having paid bribes to senior executives of Transpetro in exchange for favoring the tenders .

Recently, Germán Efromovich announced that he was interested in buying Alitalia, in bankruptcy since May 2017, as published REPORTUR.com.co (The former president of Avianca wants to buy and refloat Alitalia).

Efromovich lost control of Avianca Holdings last year after defaulting on a hedging agreement for a loan to United Airlines, which decided to hand over the management of the airline to the minority partner Kingsland, which owns about 22 percent of the shares and which belongs to the Kriete family (United seizes control of Avianca from Germán Efromovich and gives it to the Kriete family).
