Austria with a record low incidence of 2 months

Austria reported less than 2,000 new cases of coronavirus – the lowest number of infected for the day since October, while at the same time the last few regions in the country reopened restaurants and hotels on Monday, the AP reported.

Austria registered 1792 new cases in 24 hours, which is significantly lower than the daily ones highs of around 13,000 daily cases at the end of November, a trend that contrasts with growing cases in much of Europe.

Then because of the high morbidity, Austria entered a 20-day blockade on November 22nd. The national blocking restrictions were lifted for vaccinated people on December 12, but remain in force for unvaccinated people.

For the unvaccinated, a compromise will be made due to a drop in morbidity

As of December 12, each of the nine provinces of Austria has defined its own reopening policy: in some restaurants and hotels open immediately, while in others they remain closed for a few days longer. The capital Vienna chose to open shops and Christmas bazaars last week, but left restaurants and hotels closed until Monday.

In addition, the number of patients in intensive care units has also decreased, albeit more slowly than the number of cases. 475 people are treated in intensive care units, which is a drop from the high 664 in early December.

As the country reopened to the internal market, the Austrian authorities introduced stricter travel restrictions for those who come in from abroad to slow down the spread of the Omicron variant.

From early Monday, travelers to Austria must show proof of vaccination or re-entry to enter the country. Additional, two doses of vaccine are no longer considered sufficient for entry: travelers must either show evidence of a third dose or PCR test.

Austrian citizens, residents and citizens of the European Union can still enter without proof of vaccination or recovery, but face a mandatory 10-day quarantine on arrival.
