Austria bets on tests to save tourist season

With its vineyards, villages with colorful houses and the majestic Danube, the Wachau attracts thousands of holidaymakers every year, especially in high season. But at the end of June, the valley of Lower Austria, located 100 km north-west of Vienna, seems to be asleep. In the village of Weissenkirchen, we come across a few tourists but less than usual at this time of the year. Some, intrigued, watch the Red Cross van driving through the village before stopping dead in front of the Kirchenwirt hotel-restaurant. “We come here every week to test hotel workers at Covid-19,” said Michael Sartori, test manager at the Lower Austrian Red Cross.
