Austria announces lockdown – Novinky.cz

People who work at night will be exempt from the night curfew. According to the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Karel Nehammer, people will be able to play sports and exercise outside these hours as well.

“In practice, the police will legitimize people who will be in public places after 8 pm, such as parks who, for example, drink alcohol,” the Der Standard server said. Police will also target potential bar owners who would not close.

Stores remain open, but each customer must have at least ten square meters of space.

Mass events are also canceled. Demonstrations for up to 50 participants are an exception, as are working and religious rallies, according to the Die Presse server.

Cinemas, theaters, museums, swimming pools and other indoor sports grounds will also remain closed. Parks and libraries will remain open.

The course promised entrepreneurs compensation

Compared to the spring wave of coronavirus, this time Austria did not turn off the economy completely. Shops, industrial plants, kindergartens and primary schools will remain open. High schools and universities will move to distance learning.

“The decision was not easy for us, but it was necessary,” Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told a news conference. According to him, the government was led to the move by the impending depletion of the capacity of Austrian hospitals, especially beds in intensive care units.

The course also stated that the state intends to compensate entrepreneurs for lost profits of 80 percent compared to November last year. The total cost of this measure was calculated by the Minister of Finance Gernot Blümel at one billion euros (27.25 billion crowns).

On Sunday, the tightening of restrictions will be approved by parliament, which should be valid until 30 November. The night curfew will have to be approved by the legislature every ten days.

The government expects the measures to reduce the number of new infections within a week or 14 days at the earliest. “I remain optimistic and stand by the fact that we will be able to return to normal by next summer at the latest,” Kurz said.

On Friday, Austria recorded 5,349 new cases of the disease. In 24 hours, 27 people infected with coronavirus died.
