Australian Senator offers to buy Holden brand for a dollar

Queensland Australian Senator James McGrath, in connection with the withdrawal of the Holden brand from the Australian market, offered the American concern General Motors, which owns a local brand, to buy it for one Australian dollar (about 50 rubles at the current exchange rate).

According to the senator, despite the fact that the Holden brand has existed in the country for 164 years and has become part of Australia’s national culture, the American corporation decided to take advantage of the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and leave the Australian and New Zealand markets, paying little compensation to local dealers.

In this regard, James McGrath suggested that General Motors buy the Holden brand so that local dealers have the opportunity to continue to develop the rich history of the Australian brand.

The senator also believes that the amount of one Australian dollar (about 50 rubles at the current exchange rate) will be quite enough, since the American concern considers Holden useless.

Initially, the Holden brand was independent, but then it was bought by the American General Motors in 1931 and became the local division of the company. The first cars of the American-Australian brand came off the assembly line in 1948. In recent years, Holden has been represented in the country by Acadia and Equinox crossovers, an Astra hatchback, as well as a Commodore model in the back of a liftback and station wagon.

In February, it became known that the General Motors concern will liquidate the Holden brand in 2021. The automaker expects withdrawal from the Australian market will reduce costs by more than one billion dollars and lay off about 600 employees in Australia and New Zealand.
