Australia won, knocking Denmark out of the World Cup

Denmark fared better in the first half, but could not find a gap in Australia. They needed to win to advance from the group stage in Qatar.

Australia were livelier in the second half and in the 60th minute the goal came thanks to a fine solo performance from Mathew Leckie.

– I’m so proud, but now it’s all about recovery. When the ball arrived I was so happy. Look at me how much emotion there was, Leckie says on the C More broadcast.

It was the only goal of the match and a gleeful mayhem eventually erupted between the Australian players and fans. The last time they switched from the group was in 2006.

Australia’s victory means they finished second in the group behind France and therefore face a group team featuring Poland, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Mexico in the round of 16.

For the Danes, the Qatar World Cup has to be seen as a real bust as they only made it as far as the semi-finals in Europe last year. Before the WC, they were 10th in the world rankings.
