Australia Records Omicron Death

Jakarta

Australia on Monday (12/27/2021) reported its first confirmed death from the new variant Omicron COVID-19 amid another spike in daily infections.

The case of death was reported in western Sydney, State of New South Wales (NSW). The patient who died from Omicron was an 80-year-old man from Uniting Lilian Wells, North Parramatta.

Quoted from the Reuters page, the patient was recorded to have received two COVID-19 injections, but with the risk of congenital disease.

Authorities did not provide additional details on Omicron’s death, except to say that the 80-year-old man contracted the virus in an elderly care facility and died in a Sydney hospital.

“This is the first known death in New South Wales (state) associated with the Omicron variant of concern,” NSW Health epidemiologist Christine Selvey said in a video released by the government.

The states of NSW, Victoria and Queensland reported a combined 9,107 new cases on Monday, putting the country at another peak in new infections.

“Although we are seeing an increase in the number of cases… we are not seeing an impact on our hospital system,” said Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland Prime Minister who reported 784 new cases with four in hospital.

Despite reporting its first death from Omicron, the Australian government has so far resisted a return to lockdown in the face of a spike in the number of cases but has reimposed some restrictions.
