Aubervilliers Chosen for School Uniform Experiment: What It Means for Students and Education

The town of Seine-Saint-Denis was chosen to experiment with wearing a uniform at school for two years. The town of Aubervilliers had applied to the Ministry of National Education.

Two pairs of pants, two sweaters and five polo shirts, all identical: here is the basis of the uniform that future students in the town of Aubervilliers could wear. Just like Puteaux, Aubervilliers was selected to participate in the experimentation of uniforms in schools, announced the mayor (UDI) Karine Franclet during the last municipal council of the year.

“A great project which will see the light of day in 2024”without knowing the exact date, she clarified during a municipal council meeting on December 21, 2023. This was originally a government measure carried out by the Minister of National Education, Gabriel Attal , announced at the start of the school year on September 4, 2023, in the midst of the debate on wearing the abaya at school.

The councilor of Aubervilliers, who had applied for a two-year test in one of his school groups, welcomes this selection which, according to her, will make it possible to create “a sense of belonging” between students. “Our city innovates, and positions itself on issues as important as the education of our children, the fight against inequalities and school dropouts”she adds.

For Karine Franclet, there is no shortage of arguments in favor of school uniforms. To defend her position, she highlights her past as head of educational establishments and her mission to fight against school dropouts in the Île-de-France region.

“It’s a question of social justice”she indicates, “There are plenty of positive reasons.” And to explain that the uniforms will be covered by the City and the State at 50% each and that independent researchers will evaluate the effects of this measure.

In reaction to this announcement, opposition municipal councilor Anthony Daguet (PCF) said he “doubtful” during the same municipal council. It thus requires a substantive debate on the educational objectives targeted in order to assess their relevance and the results obtained after two years of experimentation.

“What matters is the question of resources at school, the number of teachers in front of students and intermediate professions, which we often forget: psychologists, nurses, which is extremely important. And the ministry “It’s nice to put a little scarecrow, a sort of frill on the question of clothing”, he denounces.

As proof, according to him, the results of the latest Pisa survey on the ranking of French students in mathematics, which demonstrates a level “catastrophic”.

The debate on school uniforms often comes up in light of the start of the school year or the interventions of the political class. Last January, Brigitte Macron said she was in favor to its establishment for “blur the differences”.

According to anthropologist Aude Le Guennec, curator of the exhibition “Dress for school” au Rouen Education Museumthe uniform has existed very little in French history, with the exception of that reserved for male boarders in public high schools founded by Napoleon in 1802. A garment imagined for a future administrative and military elite of the Empire.

The other exceptions are private establishments, often Catholic, which require their students to wear uniforms. The anthropologist reveals that wearing a uniform has no legal reality until today. Only the internal regulations specific to each establishment require this.

The uniform at school would therefore be a myth which could become reality from the spring of 2024 for certain students in Aubervilliers provided that this experiment is approved by the entire educational community of the establishments.
