Attacked by Omicron, this is India’s condition amid the threat of a new wave

Jakarta

After going through a wave of the very dangerous Delta variant, India is now reporting a very fast increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant. As of Wednesday (12/28/202!), the country reported 800 cases of the Omicron variant.

The area that contributed the most Omicron cases was in New Delhi with 238 cases. In addition, the case of Omicron in western Maharashtra is also large at 167 cases.

Due to the increasing number of Omicron cases, a number of areas there, including New Delhi, have banned large gatherings for Christmas and New Year. The government has also imposed a curfew to vaccination requirements.

“The (coronavirus) cases have increased with the arrival of international flights,” said Delhi government Health Minister Satyendar Jain, quoted from Al-Jazeera, Thursday (12/30/2021).

Although the cases of Omicron are increasing rapidly, the condition is not as severe as the Delta variant. Satyendra Jain said there was not a single patient of the Omicron variant who needed oxygen assistance as was the case when the Delta variant hit.

“Not a single Omicron patient has required oxygen support so far,” he said.

In other areas, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope was very worried after seeing the number of active cases that had increased.

“Mumbai’s positivity rate is 4 per cent. If this goes beyond 5 per cent, then we should think about imposing restrictions,” he said.

Not only that, the southern part of Tamil Nadu was also one of the worst-hit areas during the second wave of COVID-19. The trend of infection cases there has increased.

Seeing the increase in cases, local authorities have also limited New Year celebrations, both in hotels and other public places to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
