TEL AVIV – Defense Minister Israel Benny Gantz, confirmed that the troops Russia shooting down Israeli fighter jets using advanced anti-aircraft missile system S-300 . The incident occurred at a time when the Israeli Air Force (IAF) was attacking targets in the northwest Syria in May.

The incident was first reported by Channel 13 television a week after the May 13 attack, in which the IAF bombed several targets near the city of Masyaf in northwestern Syria.

“It was a one-off incident,” Gantz said at a conference hosted by Channel 13.

“Our jets weren’t even in the area,” Gantz added, confirming the original report claiming the S-300’s radar had failed to lock onto Israeli jets leaving the area, and thus did not pose a serious threat to pilots.

But Gantz stressed: “I think the situation is stable now,” as quoted from Times of IsraelWednesday (27/7/2022).

The incident marked the first use of the S-300 against the IAF in Syria.

Since the Syrian S-300 batteries are operated by the Russian military and cannot be fired without their consent, it is a worrying development for Israel.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes inside Syria during the country’s civil war and has since then targeted what it says are arms shipments to the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group Hezbollah and other Iran-linked sites.

Israel has reportedly carried out numerous air strikes in Syria since the May incident.
