Atletico to Champions League quarter-finals after penalties, Bakayoko and PSV eliminated by Dortmund

Football

After an exciting match, Atletico Madrid needed penalties to get past Inter Milan into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In the other match, Borussia Dortmund qualified after a win against PSV Eindhoven of Red Devil Johan Bakayoko.

On Tuesday evening, Arsenal and Porto ensured that penalties were kicked for the first time in eight years to decide a match in the knockout phase of the Champions League, and on Wednesday evening it was a prize again. After an exciting match, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, where Red Devil Arthur Vermeeren remained on the bench for an entire match, needed penalties to decide who would go to the quarter-finals.

The first leg ended 1-0 for Inter and Simone Inzaghi’s troops also started best in Madrid. After 33 minutes, Frederico Dimarco scored, but two minutes later Antoine Griezmann, back from injury, leveled the score for Atletico.

Also in the second half it looked like the Italians would continue, but a few minutes before the end, substitute Memphis Depay caused a Madrid earthquake: 2-1 and everything had to be done again. There was no change in the score in extra time, so penalty kicks had to decide who continued the next round. Jan Oblak was Atletico’s great hero. The keeper saved two penalties, after which Inter striker Lautaro Martinez also kicked over the goal.

PSV eliminated

In the second match tonight, PSV Eindhoven, with Red Devil Johan Bakayoko in the starting line-up, faced a horror scenario after just six minutes. Winter transfer Jadon Sancho received the ball after poor clearance on the edge of the sixteen and, as usual, scored it through the post: 1-0.

PSV, which had held Dortmund to 1-1 in the first leg, had to endure the law of the strongest in the first half and was happy to reach halftime without further damage. In the second half, however, the game pattern was reversed: the Eindhoven team went all out for the equalizer, but attempts by Lozano, Bakayoko and De Jong did not result in a goal. In the end they were hit hard when Marco Reus pushed through well and scored.
