Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, whose name is mentioned as a potential vice-presidential candidate alongside Joe Biden, announced that she was diagnosed positive at Covid-19.
After weeks of tension, and before a potential career on the national scene, the mayor of Atlanta (Georgia) hit by the Covid-19. Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Monday that she has tested positive for the new coronavirus, but has no symptoms. “I am still in shock because I have no idea how we were exposed,” she said on CNN, explaining that her husband had also contracted the disease. Both were tested after feeling tired, but without other more serious symptoms. One of their four children – all asthmatic, she said – was infected. “It’s frightening. We did everything we thought we should do. The fact that we are diagnosed positive says a lot about how easily this virus can spread and shows that none of us are protected, ”she added. The United States has crossed the threshold of 130,000 deaths caused by the pandemic.
At the end of last month, she recounted her experience as mayor in the midst of a health crisis coupled with protests against racism and police violence: “There are no specific instructions to follow for mayors and governors across the country to manage the Covid-19, and now with the protests we see across the country, she said. Few people have been tested this way as leaders across the country have been tested in recent months. ”
Potential Vice Presidential Candidate
In mid-June, Atlanta was the scene of protests that escalated into violence after the death of Rayshard Brooks, a black man killed by police while he was dozing in his car in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Drunk, the young man had struggled and tried to flee, after having grabbed the Taser of one of the officers. The latter, to prevent him from fleeing, opened fire, hitting Rayshard Brooks in the back. The police officer who shot and fatally injured Rayshard Brooks was immediately dismissed and his colleague was assigned to administrative tasks. City police chief Erika Shields immediately resigned, “because of her desire for Atlanta to be a model of what meaningful reform should be across the country,” said Keisha Lance Bottoms.
The mayor’s name is circulating among the potential vice-presidential candidates, alongside Joe Biden. The former vice-president, a putative candidate for the Democratic Party since Bernie Sanders put his campaign on hold after several setbacks in the primaries, assured that he would choose a woman as a running mate and many voices called for the choice to be made deals with a black woman. Other favorites include California Senator Kamala Harris and Florida representative Val Demings, both of whom are better known nationally.
