The city of Tokyo has been designated by the World Athletics Council to host the 2025 World Championships in Athletics, four years after the Olympic Games played in an empty stadium, the world body announced on Thursday.

“In 2025, Tokyo will have the opportunity to fill its Olympic Stadium with athletics fans who have been denied the opportunity to attend the Tokyo Olympics due to pandemic restrictions”writes the international federation in a press release.
Tokyo was preferred to Singapore, Nairobi and Silesia (Poland).

The World Athletics board met Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the World Championships which begin Friday in Eugene, Oregon, after being pushed back a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2023 edition of the World Championships is scheduled for Budapest.
