Athletics: Stephen Mailagi a golden pitcher

Example of success for the Wallisian youth, Stephen Mailagi became the new French record holder for U23 indoor shot put this Saturday February 18 in Clermont-Ferrand.

Since his debut in 2017 during the Océania d’athlétisme in Fiji, which won him a silver medal, Stephen Mailagi has continued to go beyond his performances and push the limits of the discipline. And he proved it again by winning the title of French U23 indoor champion this weekend.

I have been practicing athletics for 6 years, my goals are simple, I just want to be in top shape and work in the shadows”.

A rather discreet athlete, Stephen, alias Loulou by his middle name Louis, never ceases to impress with his results. Stephen Mailagi is the definition of surpassing oneself. The objective is not necessarily victory, it is above all “do better than last time” explains the young man.

The man who breaks records, nickname which will surely be that of Stephen Louis Mailagi who once again broke his personal best with a throw of 19m07 (record of France hope beaten). Which earned the athlete to be crowned champion of France Elite in Clermont-Ferrand.

An excellent performance which confirms his perfect start to the season. Earlier this month he had already broken his personal best by winning the shot put event at home 4e Meeting Elite Indoor de Miramas (18m59).

The new title obtained this Saturday February 18 in Clermont-Ferrand completes a fine collection of medals for the athlete from AC Miramas and the Entente Ouest Athlé who notably won bronze at the 2022 French Championships and bronze at the Mediterranean U23 Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.

A collection that has been feeding for a while. In 2018, then barely 17 years old, he joined the ASFI club of Villejuif with which he won a second silver medal during his first participation in the French shot put championships.

Stephen Mailagi will now try to win a new title next weekend at the French Winter Throwing Championships in Salon de Provence.
