On a highway about 160 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, cars have been hit by a mudslide. At least one person has died as a result. Two others have been reported missing, but police are considering the possibility that more are missing.
Several roads were damaged or impassable as a result of the storm. Vancouver is largely cut off from the rest of the country. Rail connections to and from the city have also been affected. Freight trains cannot reach the port.
Up to 250 millimeters of rain fell in and around Vancouver on Sunday and Monday. That is comparable to the amount of rain that the region normally has to deal with in a month. Thousands of evacuees are unable to return home due to flooding.
