The gold mine in the South Kivu province of Kamituga collapsed on Friday, Deputy Mayor Ngandu Kamundala said.

“Their bodies are buried under the rubble, there is no hope that there is any survivor,” Kamundala said.

After heavy rains on Thursday and Friday, the Njali River left the banks, causing water and mud to flow into the mine. The mine is less than a kilometer from the river.

Most of the victims are young men, Kamundala said.
