At CFE and Pemex, high number of Covid cases

Almost two out of 10 people suspected of contracting the Covid-19 in the country are people linked to the environment of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), from workers, retirees, family members and employees of contractor companies that provide services to them.

Between both companies they add 5 thousand 332 suspected cases, when at national level the health authorities register, until May 16, 29 thousand 409 cases of this type.

Both firms have 1,120 confirmed cases, which means that staying close to these companies – together – represents a greater risk than living in some of the 10 municipalities or municipalities considered sources of contagion by Covid-19, Mainly Tlalpan, Culiacán, Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec or in Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo, which register one thousand 54, thousand 93, thousand 45, thousand 36 and 953 confirmed cases, respectively, according to the National system of health.

The problem is bigger in the environment of Pemex. People linked to the activities carried out by the firm, oil workers, retirees, family members and personnel of contractor companies are infected by Covid-19 at a rate of 20.7 per day and die 2.5 daily on average.

By itself, the oil company has a number of deaths, up to May 16, of 135 people, a figure that exceeds the deaths reported jointly by the Mexican municipalities of Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec, Naucalpan, Tlalnepantla, Chimalhuacán and Chalco —134— , according to the daily records of the Health system of the government of the State of Mexico.

Information from the Health authorities obtained via the National Transparency Platform indicates that the two most important state companies in the energy sector, Pemex and CFE, especially the oil company, are experiencing a rapid rise in the number of people suspected of contagion, despite of the security protocols that have been put into effect.

Between May 15 and 16 alone, the number of suspected cases in the country increased by 381, according to the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell.

Of these, 224 were linked to Pemex, according to the oil company’s daily report, which means that employees close to the company contributed 59% of the cases nationwide.

As of May 16, both firms have accounted for 5,332 suspected cases, representing 18.1% of the national total registered by health authorities, not including the next CFE report, which will cover May 12-16.

Information obtained via the National Transparency Platform shows that the Villahermosa Regional Hospital, Tabasco, is one of the places where the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 has been registered so far this year, 21 of 128, at which are 13 more diagnosed with influenza and pneumonia J10-J18.

The Subdirectorate of Medical Services of Petróleos Mexicanos clarifies that according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) in its 2018 version, for its medical services, “atypical pneumonia” is not considered codified and therefore has no record of cases of this type.

In the CFE, according to its daily reports, only 153 suspected cases and six deaths have been detected, although the state power company began reporting only on April 20 and the closure of its information is until May 12.
