Astronaut Christina Koch returns to Earth, the woman who stayed the longest in space

Upon successful completion of his 328-day mission in the ISS, he became the woman who has spent the longest time in space.

The American Christina Koch returned to Earth on Thursday beating the record for the longest stay of the history in space made by an astronaut, with about 11 months in the International Space Station (EEI), inform The NASA.

Koch together with Russian Alexander Skvortsov (from Roscosmos) and Italian Luca Parmitano (from the European Space Agency) landed at 09:12 GMT in the steppes of Kazakhstan aboard the descent module of the Russian spacecraft Soyuz MS-13.

“I am very overwhelmed and happy right now,” the astronaut said while sitting in a chair wrapped in blankets waiting to be examined by doctors, pick up Reuters

In this way, Koch, 41, completed his 328 day mission in which he orbited the Earth 5,248 times. During that time it traveled 139 million miles (more than 223 million kilometers), or the equivalent of about 291 round trips to the Moon. This makes her the woman who has stayed the longest in space.

For their part, Parmitano and Skvortsov completed a stay of 201 days in space, 3,216 orbits to Earth and a trip of 85.2 million miles (more than 136 million kilometers).

Various experiments

During his stay in space, the astronaut directed and supported more than 210 investigations, in addition to volunteering in studies that seek to observe the effects of long-term spaceflight on women. Experiments can provide valuable information for future missions to the Moon or for human exploration to Mars.

Women acclimatize well to space, so I think this is a milestone that women will overcome in the future and that is what we aspire to,” said Lori Garver, former deputy administrator of NASA.

Previously, Koch had set another record by star in In October of last year, along with fellow countrywoman Jessica Meir, the first exclusively female spacewalk.

Koch had the opportunity to live in the ISS with colleagues from NASA, as well as with other researchers from different space agencies in the world.
