The Astravyez Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Belarus has only recently been officially opened, but it has already suffered from the cessation of electricity production on Sunday due to difficulties. Nevertheless, the Russian company that built the station is already discussing with Belarus the construction of the next NPP and research reactor.

IN SHORT:

  • NPP representative: It is necessary to replace “known hardware”; the reasons are not revealed.
  • It is not known when electricity production will resume.
  • Rosatom: We discuss the possible construction of another NPP and a research reactor.
  • Belarusian researcher: Belarus now has nowhere to put all this energy.

–Newly built Astravyez NPP Belarus launched last Tuesday but it was officially opened on Saturday by former President Alexander Lukashenko. However, news soon came that the NPP built near the Lithuanian border has not been producing electricity since noon on Sunday. On Tuesday, the NPP press service announced that due to technical problems the production of electricity has been temporarily suspended and it is necessary to replace “certain equipment”, but the reasons were not revealed.

Belarusian media reported that the turbine of the first power unit had to be shut down on Sunday due to the failure of transformers in one of the units, however, the incident did not pose a threat of radioactivity leakage. As explained by the Ministry of Energy of Belarus, planned tests were performed at the station, during which it became necessary to replace certain electrical measuring devices. It is not yet known when electricity production will resume.

The NPP, which Lithuania has been particularly active in building and which is also controversially assessed in Belarus itself, was built by the Russian company Rosatom. To finance it, Moscow has provided a loan of 10 billion dollars. It is interesting that shortly after the start of operation of the station, this Russian company has discussed with Belarus plans for the construction of the next station and research reactor. This is reported by the Belarusian news agency “Belta”.

Alexei Likhachov, CEO of Rosatom, said: “Most recently, on November 3, a Belarusian unit was added to the power system. It became the first” three plus “generation unit to be built on the European continent outside Russia’s borders. It is a joint victory of Russian and Belarusian specialists, which promotes the unification of people. Now we are discussing with the leadership of the republic the possible construction of another station and research reactor. “

As Lev Ligovsky, a senior researcher at the Belarusian Center for Economic Research, explained to the Dozhjj television channel,

The project is ambitious and involves another loan from Russia, but Alexander Lukashenko himself has admitted that the station’s “economy” is not well thought out.

“Yes, Lithuania has already said that it will not buy electricity from Belarus, but Belarus now has nowhere to put all this energy. While the station was being built, there were hopes that Europe might agree to buy energy from Belarus, but no, no miracle happened. according to the plan, ie without economic background, “said Ligovskis.

He pointed out that the recent resistance to the construction and commissioning of the station in Belarus has not been particularly strong, but no significant security threats are expected due to the station. Rather, one should be concerned about the national economy, which this station is undermining. For the time being, the benefits from this station are not noticeable, because it will have to repay the loan to Russia for a long time, but the station itself is not yet producing a product for which there is now demand.
