Asteroids Near Earth are Fractions of the Moon

Indonesiainside.id, California—Scientists have identified the tiny chunk tracking Earth’s orbit is a lunar asteroid Kamo‘oalewa. according to The Guardian, new observations believe it is a fragment of the moon floating in space as a result of an ancient lunar collision.

The asteroid was discovered in 2016, but so far there is little information about it. Kamo Oalewa is one of the semi-earth satellites which is an asteroid category that orbits the sun and is closest to the earth with a distance of about 14.4 million kilometers.

Although the asteroid is close from an astronomical point of view, it is the size of a ferris wheel and fainter than a star that can be seen with the naked eye. The most advanced earth telescopes are needed to make such observations.

Astronomers found that the spectrum of light reflected from the asteroid matched the lunar space rock from the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) mission using the Large Binocular Telescope on Mount Graham. (NE)
