A NASA announced that this Tuesday, the 7th, a small asteroid – 2022 NF will pass in the vicinity of Earth. According to astronomers’ calculations, this asteroid will pass at a distance of 90,000km from our planet.
The asteroid is only 140 meters in diameter and, due to its small dimensions, it is not classified by NASA as a “potentially dangerous asteroid”. How does the ScienceAlert2022 NF was detected thanks to Pan-STARRS, a system of telescopes and cameras located in Hawaii used precisely to detect this type of asteroids.
Remember that NASA is working on a system that seeks to serve as a defense in case a “potentially dangerous asteroid” presents a trajectory that collides with Earth’s.
This system – called DART – will be tested in the fall of 2022 and will crash into the asteroid Dimorphos, not with the aim of destroying it but to alter its trajectory.
