Assessing Ovarian Reserve for IVF Program

Low ovarian reserves can reduce the chances of having offspring.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Consultant Fertility, Endocrinology, and Reproductive Yassin Yanuar Mohammad, said that one of the results of the initial examination is quite important for IVF program is to assess ovarian reserve prospective mother. Low ovarian reserves can reduce the chances of having offspring.

“Conversely, the number of egg reserves that are too high can also be a marker of a condition of impaired egg maturation, which can also cause fertility problems,” said dr. Yassin in his official statement was quoted on Saturday (13/11).

Ovarian reserve refers to the number and quality of a woman’s eggs. This is closely related to reproductive potential. P

Reproductive potential is the ability of a woman to be able to produce at least one healthy egg that is ready to be fertilized. The doctor who graduated from Padjadjaran University explained that unlike sperm, which can be produced continuously, a woman’s egg is only produced once in a lifetime.

When a baby girl is born, she already has about seven hundred thousand to a million eggs. This number continues to decrease with age.

When you get your first period, the egg reserves are only four hundred thousand. A drastic decline occurs when a woman enters the age of 35-37 years. When a woman’s egg is depleted, she is no longer fertile.

This condition generally occurs around age 40, followed by menopause ten years later. However, the age of menopause for each woman is different, depending on several factors, such as a history of disease and lifestyle.

“Some women can lose their eggs faster, and some more slowly,” said dr. Yassin.

Yassin explained that a woman’s age is the simplest and most important parameter in predicting her reproductive potential. The younger a woman is to undergo a pregnancy program, such as IVF, the greater the success rate.

Because the number of eggs that are owned is still more than in women who undergo a pregnancy program at an advanced age. However, there are some conditions in which women of reproductive age have poor egg reserves (poor ovarium reserve).
