The Australian government says it will no longer recognize Jerusalem as its capital Israel. This move is seen as supporting Palestine.
Today, the Australian government has reaffirmed its position in the midst of the conflict Israel and Palestine. Australia has stated that it will no longer recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
This move contradicts the policy of the former Conservative Australian government which was quite controversial because it supported Israel to make Jerusalem its capital.

The official statement was released by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Wong stressed that the status of Jerusalem would be decided through peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, and not through a unilateral decision.
“We will not support this destructive approach (the two state solution),” Wong said in a statement, quoted Wednesday (10/19/2022).
“Australia is committed to a two-state solution where Israel and the state of Palestine will be able to coexist peacefully and safely within internationally recognized borders, “added Wong.
This policy nullified the recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel which was taken over by Prime Minister Morrison’s government. In the government of the Albanian Prime Minister, Australia will renew its commitment to international efforts to achieve a just and lasting two-state solution.
Even if it won’t recognize Jerusalem as its capital Israel, but Wong said Australia will remain a friend of Israel. And the Australian embassy will remain in Tel Aviv. Australia also continues to support the Palestinian community.
“Australia will remain a faithful partner Israel. We were one of the first countries to grant official recognition to Israel under Prime Minister Ben Chifley’s rule. Our government will continue to provide support to Israel and the Jewish community in Australia. The Australian embassy has been around for a long time and will remain in Tel Aviv, “Wong said.
“We also strongly support the Palestinian people, providing humanitarian support every year since 1951 and supporting the continuation of peace negotiations,” he added.
