With the leading role in “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” she immortalized herself in the German television landscape. Czech actress Libuše Šafránková has now died at the age of 68.
For many German television viewers, the fairy tale is simply part of every Christmas celebration: Now is Libuše Šafránková, the leading actress of “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”, has died. Her son Josef Abrhám confirmed this to the Czech broadcaster CNN Prima News (via RND).
The exact cause of death has not yet been revealed. However, she developed lung cancer as early as 2014 and a fifth of her lungs were removed in a subsequent operation, whereupon Libuše Šafránková withdrew from the public.
The actress career of “Aschenbrödel” Libuše Šafránková
Libuše Šafránková had her first film role in “Babička” at the age of 17. Only three years later, in 1973, the Czech actress achieved great fame in Germany with “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”.
The popular classic, whose fairy tale is also known as “Cinderella”, still gathers a large number of viewers in front of the television sets every Christmas. It is about a young woman who, after the death of her father, is oppressed and humiliated by her bossy stepmother. But one day Cschenbrödel gets to know a prince (played by Pavel Travnicek) through fortunate circumstances. Despite her low origins and with the help of some enchanted hazelnuts, she manages to win over the young aristocrat.
Even after “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”, Libuše Šafránková was a very busy actress with well over a hundred appearances in cinema and television films. For example, she was in front of the camera for the drama “Kolya”, which won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the Czech Republic. Here in Germany, Libuše Šafránková will probably always be known as Cinderella.
