Artur Jorge bids farewell to SC Braga for Botafogo, Daniel Sousa expected to take over in Arouca

Former central defender says goodbye in Portimão and then travels to Brazil. Successor must be in Arouca

With Artur Jorge leaving for Botafogo, SC Braga is already negotiating a successor, and the chosen one is Daniel Sousa, current coach of Arouca. The agreement is not yet closed, but the president of the arsenalistas, António Salvador, immediately went ahead with a coach who was already referenced, as per AND SHE WAS I already realized.

As far as Artur Jorge is concerned, his immediate departure is the result of an agreement to coach Botafogo, from Brazil. The 52-year-old coach will say goodbye in the game against Portimonense, which closes the 27th round of the League, on Monday.

Artur Jorge travels to Rio de Janeiro the next day, and he has a contract valid for two seasons waiting for him. SC Braga budgets around three million euros to release the coach, who has a release clause of ten million.

Botafogo and Artur Jorge are happy with the outcome, and the coach is eagerly awaited in Brazil, where he will soon face the Copa Libertadores. Fábio Matias, interim coach, will still lead the team when they welcome Junior Barranquilla, from Colombia, on March 3rd, but the Portuguese will already be on the bench when they visit the Liga de Quito, from Ecuador, on the 11th.

For now, Artur Jorge is focused on the visit to Portimonense, with the aim of closing the cycle with a triumph. SC Braga is also remaining silent regarding the coach’s departure, with the aim of keeping the squad’s focus on Monday’s match as much as possible.

Former captain of the Minho emblem, Artur Jorge will play his 104th game as coach. After a first spell, in 2020, he returned to the main team two years later, and this year he won the League Cup.

The former central defender had already been approached by Spartak Moscow, but ended up refusing the Russian team’s approach. At that time, however, the president of SC Braga, António Salvador, had already considered Daniel Sousa for the succession. Valued for his work at Gil Vicente, last season, and above all for the recovery achieved at Arouca, in the current campaign – after several years working as André Villas-Boas’ assistant -, the 39-year-old coach can now return to Minho.

Interestingly, the next round of the League, the 28th, will feature a duel between SC Braga and Arouca, scheduled for April 6th.
