The artist Christo is dead. This was announced via his official Twitter account. The artist died in New York at the age of 84. According to a message on the website of Christo, born in 1935, whose full name is Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, the native Bulgarian died of natural causes. The artist’s office confirmed this to the dpa news agency.

“Christo lived his life to the fullest,” the message said. He not only dreamed of what was possible, but also implemented it. Together with his wife Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009, he brought people together with his works of art.
Christo was born on June 13, 1935 in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. In 1957 he left the country for Prague, later moving to Vienna and then to Geneva, according to his website. In 1958 he met his future wife Jeanne-Claude in Paris. With her he created numerous works of art until her death.

His monumental outdoor art projects became particularly well known. In 1995, for example, Christo completely wrapped the Reichstag building in silver fabric for two weeks. Most recently he had attracted thousands of people with the installation “Floating Piers” on Lake Iseo in Italy. In the meantime, the authorities had access to the over 220,000 screwed floating plastic cubes to intervene because of the large crowd.
Until the end, Christo had been working on another wrapping work of art. According to his website, the Parisian Arc de Triomphe is to be covered from September 18 to October 3 next year. Christo had already wrapped the “Pont Neuf” bridge in a fabric in the city in 1985.
