Art collector and patron Meda Mládková dies at 102

Art collector, patron and founder of the Kampa Museum in Prague, Meda Mládková, has died at the age of 102. Mládková spent more than half of her life in exile, mainly in the United States, where she dedicated herself to discovering and supporting Czechoslovakian artists, creating a collection of modern Czechs with her husband.

After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Meda Mládková returned to Czechoslovakia and donated her entire collection to the country. In 1999 she established the Jan and Meda Mládek Foundation which acquired Sovovy Mlýny, a historic building in the vicinity of the Charles Bridge in Prague, and transformed the building into one of the country’s leading museums, the Kampa Museum. The museum’s collection includes more than 220 paintings and drawings by František Kupka, 16 sculptures by Otto Gutfreund, and more than a thousand works by Czech and Slovak artists created between 1965 and 1985.
