Art and culture: Culture and enjoyment at the weekend in Salzburg’s museums

The Salzburg Museum Weekend is taking place for the seventh time this year on May 21st and 22nd. Visitors can admire the cultural treasures of the numerous participating houses and collections in town and country free of charge. 16 institutions will be there on Saturday and 49 on Sunday.

SALZBURG. The Salzburg Museum Weekend is taking place again this year on May 21st and 22nd. Visitors can enthusiastically indulge in cultural enjoyment at cultural institutions throughout the state. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. there are also exciting special programs and creative activities for young and old, such as the Museums-Roas in the vintage bus in Flachgau.

power of art and culture

“The Power of Museums” is the motto of this year’s International Museum Day. “The houses and collections have the power to change the world around us. They are incomparable places of discovery and teach us about our past and open our minds to new ideas – two essential steps in building a better future,” said Governor Wilfried Haslauer.

“Everybody help together”

“A special thank you goes to the participating institutions and all employees who make the Salzburg museum weekend possible with their commitment”.
Governor Wilfried Haslauer.

Deputy Governor Heinrich Schellhorn, who is responsible for the regional museums, adds: “The numerous voluntary helpers in the regional museums also contribute to the success of this event and offer visitors a varied and exciting enjoyment of art and culture.

City of Salzburg: insignia of power, reptiles and water

On Saturday, May 21st, 15 museums in the city of Salzburg and the Salzburg Open Air Museum in Großgmain will open their doors to visitors free of charge. The insignia of power can be admired in the cathedral quarter. Meanwhile, in the House of Nature you can get to know reptiles from all over the world better. Friends of the wet element can find out everything about water in the “Water Mirror” museum on the Mönchsberg.

Flachgau: Zuckmayer, radios and bees

In northern Flachgau, on Sunday, May 22nd, the already traditional “Museums Roas” will take place in a vintage Mercedes bus from 1963. The houses in Bürmoos, Arnsdorf, Göming and Oberndorf can be visited in a relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, friends of Carl Zuckmayer get their money’s worth in the Literaturhaus Henndorf. In the Grödig radio museum, you can tinker with them and practice Morse code. And in the museum in the Fürstenstöckl in Ebenau, everything revolves around the life of our bees.

Tennengau: Celts, Kuchl, beer

History enthusiasts can travel 2,500 years into the past in the Celtic village on the Dürrnberg and experience the heritage of our Celtic ancestors interactively. The museum of the market town of Kuchl offers further information on the settlement history of the region. The arc is stretched from the Neolithic Age to modern times. In the brewery and binding museum Hofbräu Kaltenhausen, the focus is on true liquid gold (at least in the eyes of many Salzburg hop lovers).

Pongau: skiing, slow train, energy of the future

Skiing fans get their money’s worth in Pongau. Both in the Mining and Local History Museum in Mühlbach am Hochkönig and in the Salzburg FIS State Ski Museum in Werfenweng, everything revolves around the “two skis”, which for many of us are part of Austria’s essential cultural assets. In the meantime, the slow train of the Tauernbahn Museum is making its rounds in Schwarzach, while the Technical Collection Breyer in Bad Hofgastein is investigating the question of what the energy of the future will look like.

You can also take a little trip through time in the Ski Museum.

Pinzgau: Styrian harmonica, reading, Gothic

Back to the present, the Noriker horse museum in Niedernsill is very “hearty”. Visitors not only learn all sorts of interesting facts about the mighty equids, but can also hit the keys and heads on the Styrian harmonica in a taster course. Things get more tranquil in the wood adventure world of the Mühlauer sawmill in Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße. The Salzburg writer Georg Weigl is giving a reading there. In the meantime, treasure hunters can once again marvel at the historical treasures on display in the Pinzgau Mining and Gothic Museum in Leogang.

Lungau: Samson and play in Zederhaus

The special exhibition “300 years of Samson” is reopened in the Lungau local history museum. The twelve Samson figures are part of Unesco’s intangible cultural heritage and are known far beyond the borders of the smallest district of Salzburg. For theater enthusiasts there is a performance in the Maurergut monument courtyard on the history of Zederhaus.

The Lungau local history museum in Tamsweg can also be visited with free admission.

10,000 visitors in 2021

Last year almost 10,000 people visited the Salzburg exhibitions on the museum weekend. This is the ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Salzburg for free. Don’t miss it!
