The head coach of London’s Arsenal football club, Mikel Arteta, has been diagnosed with coronavirus.
The entire core team and club staff, who had contacts with Arteta, are in a two-week isolation.
The Arsenal training center is closed, the club’s next matches in the championship of England are canceled.
“I am very disappointed,” said the 37-year-old Spaniard Arteta. “I passed the test when I felt bad. I will return to work as soon as I am allowed.”
On Saturday, Arsenal was due to meet with Brighton, but this Premier League match had to be postponed until better times.
BBC Sport reports that all 20 Premier League clubs want to adopt a unified strategy, and one of the options that will be discussed on Friday is to postpone the rest of the matches planned for this weekend.
“The health of our team and the general public is our priority, and that is where we are focused,” said Vinay Venkatesham, Managing Director of Arsenal.
“We are conducting an active dialogue with all interested parties in order to properly deal with this situation, and we hope to return to training and games as soon as doctors allow us.”
The Arsenal match against Manchester City on Wednesday was postponed as a precaution after it became known that the owner and owner of the Greek club Olympiakos, Evangelos Marinakis, infected with the coronavirus, had contacted the players and the management of Arsenal.
Marinakis, 52, met several Arsenal players when the Gunners hosted the Greek club in a Europa League match two weeks ago.
Arsenal then stated that no player or staff representative would be tested for coronavirus.
Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy is self-isolated as a precaution after a family member has been admitted to the hospital with symptoms of coronavirus.
The three Leicester City core players are also self-isolating after the onset of coronavirus symptoms.
