Arrests at kick-off campaign right-wing populist Zemmour at Paris

Several thousand people have demonstrated in Paris where the right-wing populist publicist Éric Zemmour had planned to hold his first campaign rally. For security reasons, the police therefore decided to move the election meeting to the suburb of Villepinte, 20 kilometers from Paris.

It was the official start of his campaign for Zemmour (63), who wants to participate in the French presidential elections next year.

According to the police, some 2,000 people were on their feet to demonstrate against Zemmour’s candidacy. Nearly 50 of them were arrested for violating a restraining order. The demonstration in Paris was organized by a number of trade unions, left-wing parties and anti-racist activist groups.

They are angry about Zemmour’s fierce anti-immigration and anti-Islam statements:
