Arrest warrant against leading South African ruling party ANC

Magashule is responsible for the day-to-day management of the ANC as Secretary General. He had close ties to Jacob Zuma, who himself had to step down as president a few years ago on allegations of corruption. The current president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, promised to crack down on corruption.

Despite this, the Zuma camp, led by Magashule, remained in the party. Because so many of Zuma’s friends remained in prominent places, many South Africans are sad that there really can be cleaned up.

There are also public question marks as to who is really running the reins in government. “The arrest warrant against Magashule can therefore be seen as a victory of the anti-corruption camp,” said correspondent Elles van Gelder.

A Magashule spokesperson said he was not concerned; he says he has done nothing wrong.

Magashule has not yet been arrested, but a prosecutor tells Reuters news agency that he is expected to appear in court on Friday.
