Around 1500 volunteers will clean the Maas banks | Inland

In dozens of places from Eijsden to Gennep, and in Waalwijk in Brabant, teams take action. Also on the banks of the smaller tributaries, the sleeves are rolled up to remove, among other things, the large amount of plastic, household, camping and construction waste.

The major cleaning is organized by Maas Cleanup. In previous years, the organization managed to mobilize about 700 volunteers, mainly from local IVNs and Natuurmonumenten, this time more than double. “We notice that there is a lot of enthusiasm because of the floods,” says a spokeswoman for the organization. “Even from outside Limburg, people come here to help for a day.”

Not everything is cleaned. In some places there are still toxic substances that must first be removed. These spots may well be addressed on World Cleanup Day on September 18.
