Armenian Prime Minister warns of possible new war with Azerbaijan over Lachin Corridor blockade

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that a new war between his country and Azerbaijan is very likely. He expressed this opinion in an interview with the French news agency France Press, writes BTA.

“Until a peace treaty is signed and it is not ratified by the parliaments of both countries, of course a new war (with Azerbaijan – note France Press) is very likely,” warned Pashinyan in the interview.

Tensions between the two countries have increased over the Lachin Corridor, which is the only land link between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. At the beginning of July, for various reasons, Azerbaijan closed traffic to it. This blockade has created a serious humanitarian crisis in the enclave, populated mainly by Armenians, where there is now a shortage of food and medicine and there is a power cut, explains AFP.

“This is not about a genocide being prepared, but a genocide that is already underway,” Pashinyan told the French agency, accusing the Azerbaijani army of creating a ghetto in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The last round of negotiations between the two sides took place on July 15 in Brussels. No breakthrough was achieved on it. Pashinyan believes that the West and Russia should exert increased pressure on Baku to lift the blockade.

According to him, the negotiations between the two countries are hindered by, as he said, aggressive rhetoric and hate speech from Azerbaijan towards Armenians. Pashinyan accused Baku of pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing.

At the same time today, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Russia Jeyhun Bayramov and Sergey Lavrov discussed the normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia by phone, TASS and Azertach reported. Earlier, the president of Azerbaijan stated that there will soon be Azerbaijani-Armenian consultations at the level of foreign ministers in Moscow.
