Armenia Considers EU Membership Amid Strained Relations with Russia: What You Need to Know

The Armenian authorities are actively discussing the prospects for membership in the European Union.

The policies of dictator Vladimir Putin are depriving Russia of its last allies. Armenia, which until recently was Moscow’s key partner in the region, is now thinking about integration into the European Union.

The information was confirmed by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in interview Turkish TV channel TRT World.

Considering the challenges that we have been forced to confront over the past 3-4 years, existing new opportunities are being actively discussed in Armenia. I won’t reveal a secret if I say that in this series there is also the idea of membership in the European Union“, said the Armenian minister.

In general, we can state the rapid destruction of ties between Armenia and Russia. The other day Yerevan sent an official letter to Moscow about revocation of permission for the presence of border guards of the FSB of the Russian Federation at its airport.

In parallel with this, the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan openly talks about plans to eliminate Russia’s military presence in Armenia, that is, on the liquidation of the 102nd military base of the Russian Armed Forces in Gyumri.

There is also a high probability that Armenia will soon withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which is essentially the Russian analogue of NATO. Yerevan has already frozen participation in this union, without waiting for help from him in the war for Karabakh.

Now the Armenian authorities are looking for allies in the West, relying on France and the United States.

Moscow reacts painfully to Armenia’s attempts to leave the Russian zone of influence. Blackmail and threats are being used against the country. The country is openly threatened with the “Ukrainian scenario.”

Earlier, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia called the country’s dependence on the Russian Federation a “mistake.”

We also wrote that Pashinyan warned about the Russian Federation’s plans to annex Armenia and Azerbaijan to the “Union State.”
