Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of violating peace deal | Abroad

Some 6,000 people were killed in the six-week conflict. Ultimately, Armenia was forced to return large tracts of territory it had controlled for decades to Azerbaijan. The peace agreement between the two former Soviet republics was negotiated with the help of Russian mediation.

That peace seems to be coming under pressure with the accusation made by Pasjinian on Thursday. The Armenian outgoing prime minister, who resigned late last month due to persistent criticism of his actions during the war with Azerbaijan, convened his security council on Thursday for an emergency meeting.

According to Pasjinian, the Azeris entered Armenia for more than two kilometers. The acting prime minister said Azerbaijan’s army is trying to “lay siege to a southern lake.” “It is an attack on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia,” said Pasjinian. “This is an act of hostile infiltration.”

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled Pashinian’s statements provocative. According to a spokesman, Azerbaijani border troops are simply manning their posts. Last month, Yerevan and Baku also accused each other of violating the peace agreement.
