The security of the House of Representatives will soon be re-checked for ‘weak spots’. That is what Chamber President Khadija Arib says to this website.

The reason is the historic attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters. Arib says he looked at the images in astonishment last night. “It did make me think. Such a large group of people storming into the building and sidelining democracy for a while. Fortunately, it ended well. ”

For the Dutch situation, Arib immediately thought back to a storming by Kurds in 2014, when the Lower House was chaired by Anouchka van Miltenburg. Arib: “It is important not to be surprised. It could just happen again somewhere. I said: let’s do another check for the House of Representatives. Take another look at the building for weak spots. ”

According to Arib, there is contact about this with the NCTV, the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security, and a number of experts. “Our security people are trained for it,” says Arib. “I don’t believe it will happen again. But it is just like an MOT of the car: you have to check whether it is still good. ”
