If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to use AirPods with a display, well, a Chinese manufacturer has created a fake version of AirPods complete with a screen that MacRumors decided to try out.
Is a touchscreen on AirPods really worth it?
The display of the fake AirPods is activated when the case is opened. It shows the connection status, time, battery level of each earbud, noise control options, “Find My” settings and equalizer presets. Other additions include a customizable wallpaper, a flashlight, and the ability to control your iPhone’s camera.
The settings can basically only be controlled with the display. The actual AirPods must be controlled on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, with some options available through Control Center/Status Bar and others in the Settings app.
The touchscreen on the fake AirPods is, to put it politely, rubbish. Sometimes it doesn’t register touches, the sound is mediocre, there are buttons that don’t work, and the equalizer settings only make the sound worse.
So why buy these headphones? Back in 2021, Apple filed a patent for a similar concept that describes a set of AirPods with a built-in touchscreen that can be used to manage settings and control playback.
According to Apple’s patent description, it is possible to adjust the volume, add songs to favorites, play and pause, skip songs, etc. Apple suggested that the touchscreen could offer haptic feedback and provide a more convenient way to control the wireless earbuds.
Of course, we don’t recommend counterfeit products, so don’t buy them, let it be enough that they spent their money unnecessarily on a piece of waste.
