Ardern on his way to absolute majority in New Zealand: ‘V …

Incumbent Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wins the elections in New Zealand by a very big lead. Her Labor party even seems to be on the way to an absolute majority.

“New Zealand has given Labor the greatest support in 50 years,” Ardern said in her speech of thanks at the party’s election headquarters. ‘In the cities, in the countryside, even in places where we did not expect it, we got support. And I can only say one thing to that: thank you! ‘

The electoral victory of Ardern and her party is therefore not easy. With 95 percent of the votes counted, Labor would receive 49 percent of the vote, good for 64 of the 120 seats in parliament. There are still three in surplus to speak of an absolute majority.

Judith Collins of the National Party, Ardern’s main challenger, has already congratulated the incumbent prime minister on her election victory. National is currently stranded at 27 percent of the vote and 35 seats.
