Arabic Language Competitions for the Gulf States 2024: Dates, Details, and Objectives

The fifth session of the “Arabic Language Competitions” for the Gulf States begins on Saturday, February 17, at the headquarters of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah, under the slogan “In Arabic… We Innovate,” and will continue until February 21, 2024.

The fifth session of the “Arabic Language Competitions” for the Gulf States will begin the day after tomorrow at the headquarters of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah, under the slogan “In Arabic… We Innovate,” and will continue until the twenty-first of this February.

The competitions are organized by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah – one of the agencies of the Arab Education Bureau for the Gulf States – under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

The Arabic language competitions are a periodic competition in the Arabic language subject for students of the member states of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, organized and supervised by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah, and it comes within its programs for the session “1444/1445 AH corresponding to 2023/2024 AD.” The competition seeks to deepen loyalty and belonging to the language. Arabic as one of the most important tools for strengthening national identity.

The name of the competitions comes from the origin of “Nahez”, meaning to compete, and was nominated by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. The general goal of the competitions is to contribute to raising the academic level of students and teachers in the Arabic language subject in the Gulf countries, and to activate the role of institutions concerned with teaching and learning the Arabic language.

The written exams are scheduled to be held on the eighteenth of February, the oral exams on the nineteenth, and the closing ceremony on the twenty-first of the month.

During a press conference held at the center’s headquarters, the event’s activities were explained by Dr. Issa Saleh Al-Hammadi, Director of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language, Dr. Emhamed Safi Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, member of the Scientific Committee in judging Arabic language competitions, and Adel Wahib, Director of Program Management at the Center. Education of the Arabic language for the Gulf countries.

Dr. Issa Saleh Al Hammadi spoke about the importance of the competition in enhancing linguistic identity and motivating students to develop their skills in the Arabic language.

He stressed that competitions work to discover the linguistic potentials, skills and abilities of students, and work to stimulate and develop linguistic creativity among young people. Their importance is to create the appropriate environment to raise scientific competition among students of member states, enrich school curricula, and contribute to the development of teaching and learning the Arabic language.

Dr. Mohamed Safi Mosteghanemi touched on the importance of the competition in discovering talented students, guiding them to invest in their abilities, and stressed the importance of strengthening ties and enhancing communication between creative people in the Arabic language.

Adel Wahib explained the details of the competitions and their objectives based on developing the students’ Arabic language skills. The test is conducted in two stages. The first stage is the written test. It consists of a written test session whose date is set for the competitors. The test includes in-depth, atypical questions that reveal higher-level thinking skills in the field of the Arabic language. It covers the following areas: “reading comprehension skills, spelling and punctuation, grammatical rules, literature and rhetoric, and writing.” The second stage is the oral interview, which is a personal interview conducted for the candidates, as part of the first stage of the written test.
