Applicant of Corona demonstrations: AfD MP Schieske wants to become mayor of Cottbus – Berlin

AfD member of parliament Lars Schieske wants to stand in the mayoral election in Cottbus on September 11th. On Monday evening, when asked by dpa, he confirmed that he would be available as a candidate if he were to be elected at the upcoming general meeting, thereby confirming Information from rbb.

The AfD board wants to comment on the decision on Tuesday. In the 2019 state elections, Schieske won a direct mandate for the AfD in the Cottbus II constituency. He works full-time for the city fire department.

Schieske has close contacts with the association “Zukunft Heimat”, which was classified as right-wing extremist by the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In Cottbus, he belongs to the circle of applicants for corona demonstrations.

In May 2020, a demonstration registered by Schieske and advertised by “Zukunft Heimat” escalated. Police officers were also attacked from a larger group.

Schieske supported demonstration against immigration via Belarus route

At the beginning of 2021, the voluntary fire brigade of the Kiekebusch district of Cottbus posted a flyer on its Facebook page that spoke of “nonsensical coercive measures” against the corona virus. The leaflet ended with the request to “thank you very much at the next federal election (..)”. It remained unclear who had written the flyer and Facebook post. Local military leader in Kiekebusch is Schieske.

The current Mayor of Cottbus, Holger Kelch (CDU), declared in October 2021 that he did not want to run for office. The Cottbus department head for order and security, Thomas Bergner, is the new mayoral candidate for the CDU.
