An iPhone jailbreak can now also be carried out using an Android smartphone. With the current version of the Checkra1n jailbreak tool, this is the case Reddit user Stblr succeeded. Version 0.9.8 of Checkra1n has Linux support, so it is also possible to jailbreak an iOS device from an Android device. To do this, the Android smartphone must be rooted and a terminal app installed.
Job market
There are special requirements for the cable connection between Android and iOS device, because the cable must be able to put the iOS device in the device firmware upgrade mode. This mode is regularly used to install a new operating system via a USB connection. One in September 2019 discovered vulnerability in this mode allows a jailbreak.
As a result, this jailbreak cannot be prevented with an update of the operating system and therefore also works with current iOS versions, but also with older versions. However, the jailbreak is not permanent. As soon as the iOS device is restarted, it is gone and must be carried out again if necessary, if this is desired. Since modern smartphones rarely have to be restarted, the jailbreak can be used for several days or weeks.
Jailbreak not possible with every cable type
If you want to jailbreak with a USB-C Lightning cable from Apple, you might fail if you can’t use it to put an iOS device in device firmware upgrade mode. Because this is not supported by the cable type, explains Stblr. He used a USB-A-Lightning cable with a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter and was able to jailbreak it.
Various users tried the jailbreak under the instructions found on Reddit. It may take several attempts to successfully jailbreak.
The jailbreak tool Checkra1n currently supports MacOS and Linux. Support for Windows is being worked on. It is not known when this will be available.
