Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – At the launch of the iPhone 15 last week, Apple several times expressed its commitment to preventing the ‘doomsday’ on Earth.
One of them, Apple claims the Watch 9 smart watch is a carbon neutral product. However, this claim was denied by University of Hawaii climate scientist David Ho.
It is feared that the marketing narrative that Apple has created will confuse the public. David Ho explained that there is no single product that is completely free of carbon emissions. Jokingly, he explained that the Apple label might be possible if the Watch 9 sucked Co2 directly from the atmosphere.
In fact, he called this claim ridiculous. Instead of calling it carbon free, said Ho, Apple should label its products as environmentally friendly.
On a different occasion, Apple CEO Tim Cook again elaborated on Apple’s ambition to become a carbon-free company.
He said Apple had invested in a joint venture to deliver environmentally friendly electricity to 100,000 homes. The project was conducted in Brown County, Texas, a flat, dry region near the geographic center of the state.
Apple provided 6.5 km of solar panels for the project, quoted from CBS News, Monday (18/9/2023).
Apple is also making similar investments to achieve environmentally friendly energy goals in Oregon to California, China and Singapore.
Cook wants to match every carbon emitted by Apple products with clean energy and carbon capture, which is called “carbon neutral.” Starting from mining, manufacturing, shipping, even recycling.
He promises to achieve it in just seven years, and hopes Apple’s leadership will inspire other companies to follow suit.
“We’re focused right now across the company, and especially my department, on making sure every device that our customers own and operate, the electricity that they use to charge it, is balanced with renewable energy,” Cook said.
