Apple’s Chief Designer Tang Tan Steps Down: What’s Next for Apple’s Design Team?

JawaPos.com – When it comes to Apple products, design is as important as the hardware factor. Companies usually position their products as desirable objects, making it easy to sell anything at a high price.

For Apple, the name behind this success is Jonathan Paul Ive or known as Johnny Ive. He was chief designer at Apple from 1996 to 2019. “I left Apple in 2019 to start his own company, and thus began “Apple’s period of instability,” Ive said at the time.

In the last four years, the company changed its chief designer twice. It seems that Apple will have to look elsewhere because Tang Tan, who took the role at the beginning of the year, also ended up disappointing Tim Cook.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Tang Tan, who was appointed as Apple’s new chief designer, replacing Johnny Ive has stepped down as well. Although the reason for his resignation remains unclear, Tan’s next destination is reportedly LoveFrom.

LoveFrom is a design firm founded by Paul Ive, the legendary Apple designer mentioned above. Apparently, Tan will be involved as a hardware designer in an artificial intelligence project with Ive and Sam Altman from OpenAI.

Of course, it is very common for someone to leave a job and look for a new role elsewhere. However, Tang Tan is responsible for designing Apple’s main products, including the iPhone we hold today.

Stepping down from a role responsible for creating the world’s most popular product at the world’s largest technology company was somewhat surprising. Moreover, along with this resignation, Johnny Ive’s entire design team in 2019 also left the company.

This indicates a potential problem within the company. However, there is another simple possibility. The project that Ive and Altman proposed to work on probably interested Tang Tan more than the iPhone.

Unfortunately, the project they are working on is still a mystery to this day. However, it already sounds like more than just a simple product. It is currently unknown who will take over Tan’s position as Apple’s new lead designer.
