The year 2021 will see the arrival of several Macs, laptops and desktops, equipped with an ARM chip designed by Apple, advance analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In his last note on the subject, he also gives the name of a Taiwanese supplier, ASMedia Technology, which should produce for Apple USB4 controllers intended for these machines. In Apple’s products, however, this equipment would only be available from 2022, while the first products with USB4 are expected by the end of 2020 by the consortium in charge of this standard.
Ming-Chi Kuo does not say more about Apple’s plan to place an ARM chip at the heart of its different families, but this note suggests a rapid arrival on several fronts at the same time.
At the end of February, it planned already on the release of a Mac ARM – without further details on its profile – in the first half of 2021. Things are getting better, with a wolf’s eye.
As for the interest for Apple to switch to its own chips, Ming-Chi Kuo recalls some obvious advantages: control of the release schedule of new processors, reduction of their costs (estimated in a range going from 40 to 60%) and a differentiating factor from the Wintel platform. All things that Apple is already taking advantage of for its iPhone and iPad.
