“Apple will not release iPhone with periscopic zoom before 2022” | NOW

Apple does not want to add a periscopic zoom lens to its iPhones until 2022, the usually well-entered analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tells MacRumors. With such a lens, you can zoom in a lot further than on current iPhones.

Periscopic cameras work with prisms and mirrors along the length of the phone to allow a wider zoom range without loss of quality. Phones from Samsung and Huawei already use this system.

South Korean company Semco would become one of the suppliers of the camera parts, which should also speed up the autofocus of the lens. It is not known how far the iPhone will be able to zoom with the new zoom lens. In other phones, an optical zoom range of five to ten times is achieved.

In 2016, Apple released the first iPhone with the iPhone 7 Plus with a telephoto lens to zoom in twice. That lens is also used to capture depth in portrait photos. Since the addition of this lens, Apple has no longer increased the range.
