Apple Watch fall detection helped walker call for help after serious fall

Yes, the technology we use on a daily basis, such as a smartwatch, often helps people in serious accidents. It is a gain for society. That’s why it’s news. One of the most recent examples shows how the Apple Watch’s Fall Detection feature may have helped save a hiker’s life after a very serious accident.

A Apple Watch's fall detection feature came to a man's rescue from the American state of Georgia, according to information shared by the Fox5 Atlanta TV channel.  Mike Menand was hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area when his two dogs spotted a coyote in the distance.  The animals' reaction led to Menand suffering an almost fatal fall.

They got scared, threw me down and dragged me off the trail.

Menand said, referring to what happened when his dogs saw the coyote.  This activated the Apple Watch's fall detection feature, which sprang into action to call emergency services on his behalf.

I couldn't even get to the phone because the iPhone was in my pocket where I was lying.

Explained the American.  The accident caused a fracture in his leg, and a titanium rod was inserted during surgery.

Menand said he's not sure what would have happened if he hadn't been wearing an Apple Watch.

It is not known how long he would have remained lying down.  I realized I couldn't move, I couldn't get up.  He was in a lot of pain.

In fact, just a month after Menand's fall, a woman fell while hiking in the same park and did not survive.

When I read that, I thought it could have been me.  Because I was alone, with no one around me, no one really knew where I was.

If your Apple Watch Series 4 or later detects a serious fall while you're wearing your watch, it will vibrate, sound an alarm, and display a warning.
You can choose to contact emergency services or close the warning by pressing the Digital Crown, tapping Close in the top left corner, or tapping “I'm OK.”

If your Apple Watch detects that you're moving, it will wait for you to respond to the warning and won't automatically contact emergency services. If the watch detects that you have been motionless for about 1 minute, it will automatically make the call.
When the call ends, the watch sends a message to emergency contacts with your location, letting them know that the watch has detected a serious fall and that you have contacted emergency services.  The watch obtains emergency contacts from the Medical ID.
