T-Mobile is currently the only telecom provider in the Netherlands that offers the Apple Watch series 7 Cellular supports. To provide the watch with connectivity, T-Mobile Multisim developed. What are the advantages of Multisim and for whom is this application intended?
After Germany, Belgium and Hungary, among others, the Apple Watch Cellular will soon finally be available in the Netherlands. The Apple Watch series 7 Cellular in combination with a multi-SIM subscription will be available in our country from November 5, and can already be ordered. Other countries have already preceded us and the Dutch introduction has taken quite some time. Jan Pierhagen, senior product manager at T-Mobile, visibly pleased with the announcement and offering of Apple Watch series 7 Cellular with T-Mobile Multisim: “I think we’ve been working on this for about a year and a half. Of course we do this together with Apple and they leave nothing to chance. Setting up, developing, testing – Apple also tested it – that took quite some time. But we are proud that we can now offer Apple Watch 7 Cellular with T-Mobile Multisim to the Dutch Apple enthusiast!”.
How Multisim works
Multisim is a subscription form that allows users to link the 4G version of an Apple Watch to an iPhone subscription. For example, smartwatch and telephone share the same phone number. In other words; a subscription and telephone number are linked to two (e)SIMs, so that iPhone and Apple Watch Cellular share a telephone number and subscription. The Multisim subscription costs five euros on top of an existing subscription. Phone and smartwatch share the amount of data, calling minutes and text messages within the subscription form. “To clear up a big misunderstanding, Multisim is not the same as Duosim,” explains Pierhagen. “Under that principle, you got a clone of your SIM card for a second phone and you just had to wait and see which phone rang first. It was like a kind of Russian roulette where it was impossible to predict which device would connect to the network first.” This is not the case with Multisim. A call arrives on both devices at the same time until it is answered on one of the devices. Data can supposedly be used on both devices at the same time. So you can, so to speak, watch a series on your iPhone while you answer messages via your Apple Watch.
Nevertheless, the main idea behind Multisim is that the user can leave his smartphone – in this case an iPhone – at home to go out with only the Apple Watch Cellular, but still remain accessible. Pierhagen: “You can continue to make or receive calls, send and receive messages, keep track of e-mails, control your smarthome remotely if desired or monitor your health by tracking your sporting performance.”
Multisim also works on older cellular Apple Watches
Users who want to be eligible for Apple Watch Cellular with T-Mobile Multisim must have a generation SE iPhone, an iPhone 6s or newer, from iOS 15.1. The application does not only apply to the latest Apple Watch, the series 7. Users can use Multisim with all cellular Apple Watches (recognizable by the red ring on the rotary knob or red dot on the rotary knob). This also applies to older models that are not sold by T-Mobile, but that someone has obtained, for example, via Marktplaats.
T-Mobile will mainly offer the most common models in its physical stores. The range is more extensive online.
If people want to purchase the latest Apple Watch Series 7 Cellular in combination with a Multisim subscription, here are a few specifications. The latest model features the largest display ever, the always-on Retina display is 70 percent brighter, and the new version loads much faster than its predecessors.
Future music: Android smartwatches and other devices?
A striking detail that should not be left unmentioned is that in addition to Multisim with a smartphone and a cellular Apple Watch, you as a user can link up to four devices to your Multisim subscription. This means that T-Mobile may also make trips to, for example, tablets/iPads. T-Mobile also does not rule out Multisim for Android smartwatches in the future. The T-Mobile website explicitly states “Multisim is currently exclusive to Apple Watch. Possibly also for other brands in the future. As soon as we can tell you more about it, you will find it on our website.” Does that sound encouraging? “If we have something to report about that, you’ll hear it right away,” Pierhagen laughs.
